Roberto Pugliese: Hypogheios

Hypogheios is a journey in one’s “I”, descending in the depths of the inner hypogeum, where all is clearly confused and light is entangled with shadows. It is a space where boundaries are not neat, and where every single sound acquires multiple meanings and resonates in a unique, different manner.
This project, born from an idea by Daniel Bacalov and Roberto Pugliese, unites electronic music with instrumental music, creating a continuing relationship of synergy among elements coming from different artistic fields. Pugliese’s electronic instalments, counterpointing Bacalov’s percussion instruments, create a fertile ground for Costanza Savarese’s extended vocality and for the improvisation of Gilda Buttà, Alberto Popolla and Gianfranco Tedeschi. The sound of the voice and of the instruments is electronically processed by Pugliese, who, in turn, modified the electronic processes in response to the musicians’ activity. This experimental approach lends to this project a “performative” character, thanks also to the constant feedbacks happening among the various components of the ensemble, in the unceasing creation of changing structures, full of meanings which envelope the listeners of a total artwork, fluid and dense. Hypogheios was presented for the first time at ArsElettronica 21 in Linz, Austria, and later was performed at the Museo Madre.
