Allan Crossman: Millennium Overture Dance, for Flute, Clarinet, Violin, Viola and Cello

Millennium Overture Dance (fl, cl, vln, vla, cello) 8:35 Allan Crossman (1999) Written for North/South Consonance and its director Max Lifchitz, it is both a welcome piece for the new millennium, as it hits the ground running with playfulness and passion, and a dance piece, with its insistent rhythms and instrumental interplay. After the rousing opening sections, the music becomes quiet and more plaintive, reflecting on certain darker events of the century past. But somehow, the optimism returns, and we dive back into the celebration of things to come.
Millennium Overture Dance is a brilliant and fleeting work of beguiling, melodic character and supple rhythmic life. It dances between a variety of festive episodes with élan and robust invention. Philip Collins – New Music Works, Santa Cruz, CA (2006)
