Adolph Friedrich Hesse

Biography

Adolph Friedrich Hesse (1809–1863) was a German organist and composer associated with the Silesian Bach tradition.

Born in Breslau, he studied with Friedrich Wilhelm Berner and Johann Christian Heinrich Rinck. His international concert appearances helped introduce Bach’s organ music to audiences in France and Britain. Organist of Breslau’s Bernardine church from 1831, he became one of the nineteenth century’s earliest internationally recognised touring organ virtuosos. His works combine contrapuntal discipline with the expanding technical and expressive resources of the Romantic organ.
