François Roberday
Biography
François Roberday (1624–1680) was a French composer and organist who also worked as a royal goldsmith.
His surviving collection, Fugues et caprices à quatre parties, was published in Paris in 1660. Its contrapuntal writing draws on musical exchanges with composers including Louis Couperin, Jean-Henry d’Anglebert and Johann Jacob Froberger. The collection combines fugues with thematically related caprices and reflects the meeting of French keyboard practice with Italian and German contrapuntal traditions.
