Girolamo Giacobbi
Biography
Girolamo Giacobbi, born in Bologna in 1567, was an Italian composer, singer and choirmaster whose career was closely associated with Bologna. Trained in the musical establishment of the Basilica of San Petronio, he became its maestro di cappella in 1604. His sacred music combines the polyphonic tradition with the expanding resources of early seventeenth-century concerted writing.
He also helped establish the new dramatic and monodic styles in Bologna. His surviving secular works include L’Aurora ingannata, published in 1608, and other musical dramas written for the city’s aristocratic and academic circles. He was closely involved with the Accademia dei Floridi and subsequently the Accademia dei Filomusi.
