Lorenzo da Firenze

Biography

Lorenzo da Firenze, also known as Lorenzo Masini or Magister Laurentius, was a fourteenth-century Italian composer, organist and teacher. He served as a canon and organist at San Lorenzo in Florence, where he worked alongside Francesco Landini. He died in late 1372 or early 1373.

His surviving secular music includes madrigals, monodic ballate and a caccia, as well as the didactic piece Diligenter advertant cantores, often called L’Antefana. His settings of poets including Boccaccio, Sacchetti and Soldanieri place him at the intersection of the literary and musical cultures of the Italian Trecento.
