Marc-Antoine Charpentier
Biography
Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643–1704) was a French Baroque composer whose work encompasses sacred, theatrical and chamber music.
Although he never held a post at Louis XIV’s court, he secured important appointments in Paris and produced a substantial and varied catalogue. His vocal writing combines dramatic expression with detailed attention to harmony and instrumental colour. Overshadowed during his lifetime by Lully, his music received renewed recognition in the twentieth century. His sacred works form part of Lunaensemble’s French programme Lux.
