Matteo Musumeci (born in Catania in 1976) is an Italian composer whose work spans opera, orchestral and chamber music, and music for the theatre. He began writing incidental music for the Teatro Stabile di Catania at the age of sixteen. His song Resta qui won the Premio Andrea Bocelli composition competition and was recorded on Cieli di Toscana in 2001.
His first opera, Aitna, inspired by the myths and landscapes of Mount Etna, was premiered in Ostrava in 2005. His catalogue also includes symphonies, string quartets and the cantata Diva Agatha. He has received commissions from institutions including La Fenice in Venice and the Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania. For Nova et Vetera, he composed Nero barocco (2016), a work for double bass and piano that evokes the contrasts of Catania, its volcano and the sea.
