Nautilus for orchestra by Antonello Rizzella was composed between January and February 2022. In his introductory note, the composer describes a musical exploration of the Fibonacci sequence, applied to melody, harmony and rhythm. The spiral shell evoked by the title provides a conceptual reference for the work’s construction.
The music unfolds in a freely rhapsodic, symphonic form. An opening section develops a ten-note collection ordered through the numerical sequence. A contrasting passage employs a nine-note field, chords built from fourths and rhythmic values of two, three and five. A more lyrical third section explores a seven-note collection and intervals ranging from quarter-tones to major thirds; the closing section returns to earlier material with a changed coda.
The score includes the composer’s introductory text and a notation guide covering microtonal inflections and extended instrumental techniques.
Instrumentation: two flutes (second doubling piccolo), two oboes (second doubling English horn), two clarinets (second doubling bass clarinet), two bassoons (second doubling contrabassoon), two horns, two trumpets, timpani, piano and strings.
Full score in A3 format.
