Vincenzo La Spesa’s Nine Studies and a Fugue explores the technical and timbral resources of the concert electric guitar. Conceived as a cycle lasting approximately 30–35 minutes, the collection develops recurring melodic and rhythmic material across its studies, culminating in the subject of the final fugue. Individual studies may also be performed separately.
An extensive preface explains the notation and performance techniques, including natural and pinched harmonics, percussion, tapping, sweep picking, jack-cable techniques, E-Bow and palm muting. The studies call for specified amplification and effects; the final three-voice fugue uses a clean electric sound to preserve contrapuntal clarity.
