All the pieces can be performed individually, either in the order in which they appear in the score or in any order the performer chooses. e performer may also choose to alternate the four parts that make up the transcription of da Milano with the five Troni, or to perform the Canzone first, followed by one or more Troni. In the first piece, the resonance of the strings must be completely dampened by a cloth placed between the soundhole and the bridge. e resulting sound should be dark, with pitches bordering on indeterminacy. For each symbol on the second staff, the performer may choose any extended technique or follow the legend below. BITONES. BITONES. Specifically, for this F#, the player positions the L.H. at the indicated pitch and plucks using the index finger of the same hand the section of string between the note and the nut. e result is a very high-pitched, percussive tone. For all other BITONES at pitches other than this one, cross your hands and move the L.H. beyond the notated position on the fretboard so as to pluck the portion of the string between that position and the nut. BLOWN SOUND: Using the index finger of your R.H., lightly brush the D, A, and E strings at various points along their length, from the fingerboard to the soundhole. e motion should always be quick and sharp, moving in different directions (toward the fingerboard or toward the soundhole). is produces a high-pitched sound resembling a rapid, crescendoing whistle. BASS DRUM: Strike the area between the upper part of the bridge and the guitar’s soundbox with the heel of your R.H.. is produces a dark, low-pitched, percussive sound similar to that of a bass drum. Sounds of indeterminate pitch produced by placing a finger of the L.H. on the G, B and E strings at any position between the end of the fingerboard, the soundhole, and the bridge. e result is a sound similar to a highpitched woodblock.

STRUMMING: Place the palm of your R.H. over all the strings between the soundhole and the bridge. Move your hand in a circular motion across the strings, changing direction according to the indicated rhythm. GUERO: Using the fingernail of your right index or middle finger, make a quick stroke from low to high across the small section of strings between the nut and the bridge. BITONES B: Place your left index and ring fingers on the F and G notes on the first string. Pluck the section of the string between these two notes firmly with your left middle finger. With your R.H., pluck the section of the string at the specified pitch between the nut and the headstock. II. e second score is a rough outline. An irregular pulse—rhythmically off-kilter yet relentless—alternates between these two timbres that should never meet: on the first staff, a timbre known as a “sdrucciolo” (see legend) to be played with the L.H., and a sequence of natural harmonics on the second staff to be played with the R.H.. e improvisation should last no more than 5 minutes. SLIDE SOUND: With your L.H., place your index finger on the D̆ fret on the sixth string (or find the pitch that produces the best tone, still on the sixth string). When the arrow points down, lift your finger off the fretboard. is produces a sound that’s halfway between a double chord and a noise. When the arrow points up, return your index finger to the D̆ fret, producing a sound similar to but complementary of the previous one.

III. e third piece is a polyrhythmic monody characterized primarily by the alternation of muted passages (dashed line) and standard articulations. ese are also interspersed with L.H. hammer-ons (always muted), bitones, and pizzicatos on the string fragments near the headstock. e piece can be performed in two ways: by adhering to the initial metronome marking and agogics throughout the entire piece, or by alternating the performance of the muted sections at the initial metronome marking with the sections featuring normal articulation (unmuted) at slower speeds, with a perceptible sense of restraint. Muted with the R.H. and hammer-ons with the left hand only. IV . e fourth piece should be played using only the L.H. with hammer-on on the specified notes. V . Like the third, the fifth piece is also a monody in which the latent, virtual articulation of polyphony is achieved by allowing the notes to resonate and holding the notes as long as possible.
