About this edition

Le vicende della sorte is a dramma giocoso in two acts by Niccolò Piccinni, with a libretto by Giuseppe Petrosellini after Carlo Goldoni’s I portentosi effetti della Madre Natura. The edition records its first performance at the Teatro Valle in Rome on 3 January 1761.

This vocal score presents Paolo Messa’s reduction for voices and piano, with recitative harmonisation and revision of the libretto by Emanuela Aymone. The five vocal roles are Celidoro and Ruggiero (tenors), Cetronella and Ruspolina (sopranos), and Poponcino (baritone).

Prepared in connection with the centenary of the Conservatorio “Niccolò Piccinni” in Bari, the volume includes a synopsis by Emanuela Aymone, introductory notes by Maria Grazia Melucci, the libretto, the opening Sinfonia and both acts. The introductory essay describes the edition’s comparison of the autograph score with the Milan manuscript source.
