Description

Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition (1874), arranged for two guitars by Duo Kontaxakis–Ivanovich (Michalis Kontaxakis and Dejan Ivanovich).

The arrangement draws on the original piano texture while exploring the contrasting colours, harmonics and extended techniques of the guitar duo. The edition includes an editor’s note, general performance conventions and detailed observations for each guitar, with guidance on articulation, phrasing, harmonics and dynamics.

The score uses scordatura and requires a third guitar as an alternative instrument for passages in the low register; the work remains written for two performers. The first guitar’s sixth string is initially tuned to D, the second guitar’s to C, and both fifth strings to G. An additional instrument with a bass sixth string tuned to G1 extends the range in the central movements.

The complete arrangement received its first performance at the Jijona Guitar Festival on 17 January 2020. Engraving by Dejan Ivanovich.

Composer(s)

Modest Musorgsky (b Karevo, Pskov district, 9/21 March 1839; d St Petersburg, 16/28 March 1881). Russian composer. His life was disjointed, ending in loneliness and poverty, and at the time of his death some of his most important compositions were left unfinished. His greatest achievements were as a composer of operas and solo songs. Largely self-taught and highly intellectual, he discovered a way of writing for the voice that was both lyrical and true to the inflections of speech. He was the most strikingly individual Russian composer of the later 19th century and an avatar of modernism for the generation of Debussy and Ravel.
