Biography

Carlo Fierens

Described by Ricardo Iznaola as “one of the most attractive and engaging artists of the guitar nowadays”, Carlo Fierens was born in Finale Ligure, Italy. Active as a performer, musicologist and educator, he has distinguished himself in all three fields. He has won numerous prizes in international competitions, including the Alirio Díaz Competition in Rome, the Indianapolis Matinée Musicale Competition and Italy’s National Prize for the Arts. His concert career has taken him across Europe, the Americas and Asia, and to prestigious venues including the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

His performances have also been broadcast by RAI, Italy’s national public broadcaster, the National Public Radio of Armenia, Polish Radio and Radio Nacional Argentina. Sandro Cappelletto, music critic for the Italian newspaper La Stampa, selected him among the most promising musicians of the younger generation, praising his handling of contrasts and sudden changes in the writing, the richness of his sound, and his assured phrasing and sense of musical breathing.

Fierens began studying the guitar with his father, Guillermo, an internationally acclaimed concert guitarist. He later studied in Trento with Norma Lutzemberger while pursuing musicological studies at the University of Pavia. He continued his education in the United States, earning an Artist Diploma at the University of Denver under Ricardo Iznaola and Jonathan Leathwood, and studying with Ernesto Bitetti at the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University.
