Debora Rosti

Biography

Debora Rosti was born in Modena, Italy, in 1971. She began studying the flute at the age of thirteen with Gabriele Betti at the O. Vecchi Conservatory in Modena and obtained her flute diploma at the L. Campiani Conservatory in Mantua in 1990. She continued her studies with Glauco Cambursano at the International Academy of Music (ICONS) in Novara, at the School for Advanced Musical Studies (APM) in Saluzzo, with Maxence Larrieu at the Geneva Conservatory, where she obtained the Prix de virtuosité, and with Bruno Cavallo.

She has worked as a flautist and piccolo player with many leading Italian opera and symphony orchestras, including those of the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, I Pomeriggi Musicali in Milan, the A. Toscanini Orchestra in Parma, Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Teatro Bellini in Catania and La Scala in Milan. In 2001 she was one of the two finalists in La Scala’s international competition for its vacant piccolo position.

Since 2000 she has held the principal piccolo position in the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana in Palermo. She also performs as a soloist and in chamber ensembles.

Her teaching has focused on the piccolo, for which she has developed a distinctive pedagogical approach. She has led the annual postgraduate piccolo course at Palermo’s Arte Nuova association and is regularly invited to give courses and masterclasses at Italian music academies and conservatories.

In 2017 Da Vinci Publishing issued her collection of Baroque pieces for piccolo, Bar-Oct, and released her recording of the same repertoire on CD. That year she was also invited to perform at the National Flute Association’s annual convention in Minneapolis.

Her research into the piccolo’s solo repertoire continues through the discovery and arrangement of works originally composed for other melodic instruments and particularly suited to the piccolo.
