Girolamo Salieri

Biography

Girolamo Salieri was an Italian clarinettist, basset-horn player and composer active in the first half of the nineteenth century. Born in Legnago, he was the son of Francesco Antonio Salieri and the nephew of the composer Antonio Salieri. A letter from his uncle dated 1815 recommends him for a principal clarinet position at the opera theatre in Trieste.

He worked in Trieste and also appeared in Vienna and Venice. Contemporary reports praised his virtuosity and the sweetness of his playing. His surviving music includes works for clarinet and piano, basset horn, chamber ensembles and two clarinets, often drawing on the operatic themes and variation forms popular with the instrumental virtuosos of his time.
