Riz Ortolani (1926-2014) was an Italian composer and conductor, best known for his film music. His international career included the score for Mondo cane and its song More, written with Nino Oliviero, alongside work for Italian and international cinema and television. His melodic writing draws on orchestral, popular and jazz idioms. Cantabile includes an arrangement of his Oh My Love.

Album notes

Cantabile is the second album by guitarist Gabriele di Franco and pianist Francesco Negro. It continues the exploration begun on Synolon, bringing melody and lyricism to the centre of their dialogue. Acoustic piano meets semi-acoustic guitar and electronic colours in a programme rooted in jazz and open to improvisation and song. Guest vocalist Vanesa Diaz Gil joins the duo on At the Border and Dopo Tutto.

The programme combines compositions by di Franco and Negro with their arrangement of Riz Ortolani’s Oh My Love. Its seven pieces explore the meeting of singing lines, space and timbre, from the intimacy of the duo to the additional expressive dimension of the voice.

Recorded on 12 and 13 August 2023 at Cicaleto Recording Studio, Arezzo, Italy. Mixed and mastered by Francesco Ponticelli. Artwork by Federico Fiordigiglio, Studiosciolto.
