Otto Nicolai: (b Königsberg [now Kaliningrad], 9 June 1810; d Berlin, 11 May 1849). German composer and conductor. His opera Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor was the most successful comic opera composed in the first half of the 19th century. As founder of the Vienna Philharmonic Concerts, at that time one of the most modern concert ventures in Europe, he set new standards of orchestral playing, and he contributed significantly to the history of interpretation.
