Tre Novelle, for guitar and string quartet (2016)
The overall title of the composition and the subtitles of the three pieces that forms it, reflect a personal intention to create music, that is not only a well thought out and engaging play of rhythms and sounds, but it’s also capable of telling a “story”, evoking atmospheres and emotional states. In the three pieces, certain characters appear (the musical themes), whose stories can be followed (thematic development): it’s clearly evident, therefore, my narrative intention. To this end, it must not be forgotten the famous quote by Victor Hugo: “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent”.
The first novella, Antagonisms, is built on the dialectic between two thematic ideas: the first one, more rhythmical and open; the second one, more restless, veiled, and melodic. The structure of the piece essentially follows the classical sonata form, though meant modernly. In fact, in the central section of the piece, the ideas are developed and transformed.
The second novella, Inner World, is an introspective composition; it narrates and explores emotional states veiled with melancholy. It is organized in three parts: the first one (A) is more peaceful and touching, and it opens with a cello pizzicato that presents the main theme; the second one (B) is more restless, with quick guitar note passages supported by sustained chords in the strings; the third part is a revised resumption of A, followed by a brief coda.
Dances and Shadows of the Evening, on the whole, is a more lively and sparkling piece, and might evoke memories of a summer party. Its structure is reminds the rondo’s one: A-B-A’-C-A”-B’-A”’/C”-Coda (the A section thus repeatedly comes back circularly). Section C, placed in the middle of the composition, differs from the rest of the piece and it’s defined by an intense lyricism: an expressive melody relied on the guitar, supported by sophisticated strings harmonies (the shadows of the evening); metaphorically, it represents a moment of reflection and detachment before once again being swept away by more intense and engaging rhythms.
Mythos, for guitar and piano (2023)
The piece is divided into two parts, each dedicated to an ancient Greek myth: the myth of Arachne and that of the Minotaur.
First Part (Arachne, the Weaver)
The Roman poet Ovid tells the story of Arachne in Book VI of the Metamorphoses, but it seems that the character, already mentioned in Virgil’s Georgics, is originally Greek. This myth is both as a warning against pride and excessive arrogance (hybris) and a celebration of artistic skill and human talent.
Arachne lived in Lydia. She was so exceptionally skilled at weaving that she believed herself even superior to the goddess Athena and challenged her to a contest. Arachne chose as the theme of her tapestry the loves of the gods and their misdeeds; her work was so perfect and ironic that Athena became enraged, destroyed the tapestry, and struck Arachne with her shuttle. The goddess then transformed Arachne into a spider, condemning her to spin and weave for all eternity. In this first part of Mythos, there are two main musical ideas: the first one, more animated and complex, represents Arachne’s artistic talent; the second one, slower and more solemn, symbolizes the goddess Athena. The two ideas face and challenge each other. At the end of the piece, the high and delicate notes of the piano represent Arachne’s transformation (metamorphosis) into a spider.
Second Part (Theseus and the Minotaur)
The Minotaur, son of the Cretan Bull and Pasiphaë, queen of Crete, was a monstrous and ferocious creature, with the body of a man and the head of a bull. The city of Athens, defeated by Minos, was forced to pay a terrible tribute: each year, it had to send seven boys and seven girls to be devoured by the Minotaur, who was imprisoned in the labyrinth of Knossos. The brave Theseus volunteered to kill the Minotaur. When he arrived in Crete, Ariadne, daughter of Minos, fell in love with him and helped him find his way out of the labyrinth. Theseus killed the Minotaur, but after completing his mission, he broke his promise to marry Ariadne and abandoned her. Upon awakening and finding her lover gone, Ariadne wept in despair until her cries were heard by Dionysus, who, to comfort her, took her as his wife.
This myth explores the themes of courage, cleverness and ingenuity, and sacrifice. In the piece, three thematic ideas are presented: the first one, rhythmic, rough, and harsh (Minotaur); the second one, ascending (Theseus, the brave one); and the third one, delicate and dreamy (Ariadne). At the centre of the piece is a lively section depicting the battle between the Minotaur and Theseus. In the end, the themes of Ariadne and the victorious Theseus reappear.
GUITARRESCA, for guitar (2006)
The composition, written back in 2006, is actually structured in three musical pieces. The first, titled Preludio, has a rhapsodic structure and character, switching between two contrasting musical sections: the first one is more nervous and rhythmic, while the second one is very intimate and reflective. The following is Melodia, dedicated to my father. It is a touching, melancholic song. At the end of this song, there is a brief and more intense moment, after which the melody gently fades away. The third Danza, is a more playful piece. It has a lively rhythm with a lot of repeated notes, and the accents are often shifted to the weak beats. It ends in a resolute manner.
DUNE, for accordion and guitar (2014)
The piece is structured in two movements: the first one is mainly expressive and lyrical in character, while the second one is rhythmic and incisive. The title Dune, which was assigned after the piece was written, evokes the desert sand hills, but it is actually meant to be metaphorical.. Dunes, in fact— characterized by the relentless generation of peaks and valleys —represent the depth of the human soul, within which, different states of mind, as joy, melancholy, enthusiasm and introspection can suddenly interchange. The composition expresses these emotional “disruptions” through the arched profile of the melodies, the crescendos and decrescendos in intensity, and through the moments of harmonic tension and release.
LEVANTE, for cello and guitar (2020)
The wind blowing from east to west brings us different musical notes. In the first part, after a very brief cello introduction, these notes are restless and nervous: the instruments often interact in an intense dialogue with each other. In the central section, whereas, a melancholic song tells us about stories from far away. Then the slightly joggling musical wind from the beginning comes back—but only briefly: the tender, heartbreaking melody reappears and gently soothes us. At the end, just a few notes—and the music fades away
