ComposersFarinetti, TommasoBiographies

Tommaso Farinetti is an Italian pianist and composer whose work ranges from classical repertoire to contemporary experimentation, free improvisation and electronic music. He studied at conservatories in Turin, Genoa and Trento and pursued musicology at the Faculty of Musical Palaeography and Philology in Cremona.

Based in Germany, he has performed as a soloist and ensemble musician in venues including Munich’s Isarphilharmonie, Prinzregententheater, Künstlerhaus and Gasteig. With pianist Serena Chillemi, he formed Minimal Duo to explore rarely performed minimalist repertoire for two pianos. His collaborations with actor Gerd Lohmeyer combine music and spoken language.

He has taken part in the Carl Orff Competition and Festival in Andechs and has performed on piano and celesta with the Munich Symphony Orchestra. Alongside concert work and teaching, he composes for film and documentary projects, including Il fuoco, Le nostre verità and the documentary cycle that led to Attraverso i muri.

Edition notes

Introductory Note Night Songs began as a recording session in Munich during the night between October 31 and November 1, 2023. While reading Heiner Müller’s Traumtexte , I felt that something in those pages was close to the way these pieces emerged: as fragments shaped in a state where memory, image, and language remain unsettled. The seven pieces were created as single- take piano improvisations late at night, guided by listening rather than predetermined form. In that nocturnal space, the clock served as the only compass, marking musical moments as they appeared and disappeared. I played these pieces on a grand piano prepared with felt, producing a soft, unstable sonority rich in shadows and resonance. Later, listening back to the recordings, I tried to bring them onto the page, seeking to preserve their colour, breath, and decay. I imagine Night Songs as a cycle of nocturnal fragments suspended between memory, clock time, and sound. Tommaso Farinetti Munich, 15 June 2026
