Description

FOREWORD
Eduardo López Juarranz (1844 or 1846 – 1897) was born in Madrid. There he studied the oboe with Grassi and composition with Arrieta at the Royal Conservatory. In 1871, his last year as a student, he won the first prize in composition. Later, in 1876, he became a military musician and since then devoted himself to introducing military music at concerts.
The romanza for cello and piano ¡El primer amor! [The First Love!] was dedicated to Víctor Mirecki [Mireschi on the cover], cellist of Franco-Polish origin settled in Spain since 1870, at first member of the Concert Society and the Quartet Society, later professor at the Royal Conservatory in Madrid. Dated in 187[9?], the manuscript score on which this edition is based belonged to the Spanish cellist José de Castro (c 1855 – ?), student of Grützmacher in Dresden. We appreciate the generosity of José Carlos Gosálvez Lara –former librarian at the Royal Conservatory in Madrid and currently Head of the Music Department at the Spanish National Library–, who provided us with a copy of the manuscript.
